In August, the county of Santa Clara released a study that showed higher levels of lead in the blood of children who live close to the airport. Following Cassell neighborhood association’s leadership, LUNA together with SOMOS Mayfair, Working partnerships and other community partners worked on an outreach plan to bring the closure of the airport to a vote at a county meeting. For two months, we worked to canvass the neighborhood, distribute information online and mobilize affected individuals to provide public comment before the county board of supervisors. In a historic win for this community, a unanimous motion passed to seek early closure of the airport.

Submit a comment to the Environmental Protection Agency

The EPA is currently reviewing their strategy to reduce lead pollution. Send a letter encouraging them identify Reid Hillview as a source of lead and encourage reparations for communities by closing the airport.
