Tropicana-Lanai (Our Oldest Chapter)

Our Tropicana Chapter is our oldest chapter. This chapter was established in 2015 when a group of LUNA organizers and activist went across the neighborhood taking surveys about the concerns of the neighborhood. Thus the Tropicana-Lanai neighborhood became the very first neighborhood LUNA canvassed. Later it became the very first neighborhood that LUNA organized.

 Through the years our team has provided support to the neighborhood guided by the Tropicana-Lanai neighborhood association president and long term leaders. ​

Wooster & 26th (Our Newest Chapter)

In January 2023, LUNA, in partnership with Sunrise Middle School, began the Elevar Jóvenes campaign in the Wooster and 26 neighborhood with 9 promoters. Little by little they gained trust and built relationships that allowed us to begin organizing in the neighborhood. Residents expressed concern about the Five Wounds development, which is being planned in the neighborhood. 

Leaders want to know how they can protect themselves from possible displacement. This led to the creation of the Wooster and 26th chapter. This is our newest chapter and it has held its first big event: a resource fair. Currently LUNA organizers are developing a base and developing leaders to organize for the development of new apartments and fight against possible displacement.

Santee

Since 2015, LUNA has been working with leaders from the community to advocate for better resources and more rights to tenants. A major stepstone that Santee community members and LUNA worked collectively to organize and advocate for Just Cause that was passed to protect the rights of tenants in 2017 in San José. Since then, LUNA has provided resources for housing and immigrants' rights advocacy. During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, LUNA assisted with rental aid to those most in need. Also, during the pandemic, LUNA in collaboration with the McLaughlin Area Tenant Association set up a food pantry to support those in need that lost their jobs or their work hours were cut short due to Covid-19. LUNA continues providing the tools to Santee’s community members  to develop their leadership skills.

Valley Palms

In 2022, LUNA started working with tenants at Valley Palms Apts to organize against high rent increases through public rallies and demand letters to fight a rent increase of 20% that KDF Communities (Corporate Landlord) gave to most tenants. The power that the tenants built by uniting and organizing were able to bring KDF Communities to reduce their rent increase for that year to 10%. 

In 2023, Orchard Glen Apts, Cherry Creek Apts, and Regency Square Apts joined Valley Palms Apts (all apartment complexes owned by KDF Communities) and formed building-wide tenant associations that have sent individual demand letters with accompanying petitions that include a majority of occupied rental units at each complex.

San Antonio

There are three different mobile home parks in this neighborhood and after one year of advocacy, LUNA has helped the San Antonio mobile home park establish a leadership group to bring neighbors together to identify the issues they face, and work together to find solutions. 

The San José Mobile Home & RV Park Neighborhood Association has achieved great success since officially becoming a tenant association in March 2022. The association has overcome several challenges that have made them stronger in demanding changes in the neighborhood. Their goal is to create a housing cooperative to create an affordable housing opportunity in the city, so that they can own their own home and be an example to follow for other neighborhoods that want to create their own cooperative. On the way to their goal, they have connected with other organizations, politicians, and their staff. In addition, they started a campaign to combat the extreme heat in the neighborhood. They have demonstrated a strong commitment to their reality now and their long-term vision.

Gramercy

In 2022, LUNA had been working in the neighborhood for about eight months.  In that time, a fledgling neighborhood association, which residents have named the Unión y Fuerza Gramercy Neighborhood Association, was formed. The mission of the association is to empower and unify the vibrant Latino communities residing in the Gramercy Neighborhood​

The focus of residents is to host monthly neighborhood clean-ups, establish a community center, continue to collaborate with elected officials to improve safety with measures like speed bumps and enhanced lighting, and continue to partner with non-profit organizations to provide resources and informative presentations. Their primary goal is to ensure that the majority of tenants are informed of their rights and building community center fostering a stronger, safer, and more connected community

Previous Chapters

East Palo Alto - Comite de Vecinos del Oeste de East Palo Alto 

In early 2020, LUNA started collaborating with leaders of the neighborhood association in East Palo Alto (Known as the Comite de Vecinos de East Palo Alto). Community leaders in this neighborhood had already been advocating for tenant's rights, and LUNA has been supporting their leadership as a fiscal sponsor for various projects related to the census campaign, food distribution, providing low-cost internet and more. The association continuously works to promote tenant and immigrant rights as well as advocating for environmental justice.
